Clinical: Central Supply Services & Sterilization - Career Choices

(Very High Demand Job!)

Job Description:

The primary responsibility of a Central Service Technician is the sterile processing of surgical equipment and materials:

  • Clean, sterilize, and store reusable medical supplies, instruments, and equipment that have been used in the operating room, patient unit, emergency room, outpatient department or in the laboratory.

  • Use disinfectant solutions, toxic gases, high pressure steam sterilizers.

  • Evaluate and inspect equipment. Make minor repairs.

  • Transport and dispense supplies and equipment to assure their availability where needed.

To Get Licensed:

  • KS state requirements for licensure: None
  • Certification is offered through two professional organizations: The National Institute for the Certification of Healthcare Sterilization Processing Distribution Personnel (NICHSPDP); and The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM).
